Red Room

Baber Studio was engaged by the UQ Union to complete a fit-out of the student bar The Red Room.

The project revolved around the concept of making the space more connected to the university campus and the students. This was achieved through the stripping back of anything in the venue that was superfluous, and through the introduction of natural materials including terracotta and zinc to bring colour into the space. White breeze blocks were introduced to create a dining / study area and also to connect to the existing breeze blocks used in the original Union Complex building.

Where possible, recycled components were also used in the fitout. This included all of the timber for the dining area seats and custom made lighting fixtures.

Artwork was introduced through Melbourne based artist ‘Cruel’ who used motifs and abstracted cover art from iconic Brisbane bands to bring a narrative to the venue.
